Show creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacas told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday that he didn't want to rush things.
Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa just teased that the show's Core Four (Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead) will go through some major turmoil next season - and he says fans should be especially concerned for Jughead (played by Cole Sprouse).
He further explained, "We wanted to honor Luke, and figure out the best way to handle the character of Fred Andrews in the show, so we sort of said, you know what? Let's not squeeze, let's not rush to squeeze something into the finale, or into the last couple of episodes".
Aguirre-Sacasa called Perry "one of the hearts of the show, ' and said that the dynamics of The CW's Archie adaptation 'always turned back to" interactions between Fred and Archie Andrews (played by K.J. Apa).
Perry passed away in early March following a massive stroke that put him in a coma. That was so wonderful to have, and so that was part of our thinking too. With that in mind, apart from wrapping up Alice Cooper's journey with The Farm, which he promised would be addressed in Season 4, Aguirre-Sacasa and company have other plans in store for the show's primary characters. "We wanted to take the time to understand how the show will change [without Fred], and how we could best address that". For the rest of the season, Archie's estranged mom Mary (Molly Ringwald) returned to fill in the role of his parent while Fred's absence remained unaddressed.
"I think she was actually even in Vancouver when we heard the news, or she was flying to Vancouver, and she said 'If you need me to stay longer I'll stay longer, ' and I said 'That would be great, Molly.' She did, and it really helped us".
Season four will also deal with the fallout from the Gargoyle King's identity finally being revealed.
