"I wanted to play at Quail Hollow, but to be honest with you, I wasn't ready yet to start the grind of practicing and preparing and logging all those hours again, " Woods said of the Wells Fargo Championship, which he skipped two weeks ago.

This marks the first PGA Championship since 1948 to be played in May after the event was shifted this year from its traditional August spot in golf's lineup.

"I hope I don't get a lot of grief from the fans", Daly told the Associated Press last week. But the field will also be unique because it will include one competitor moving about the course in a golf cart.

Because of osteoarthritis, Daly received a medical exemption that will allow him to use a cart when the tournament begins Thursday at Bethpage State Park's Black Court on Long Island.

Tiger Woods' preparations for the US PGA have been overshadowed by the American superstar and his girlfriend being sued for the wrongful death of a barman at their Florida restaurant.

"As far as J.D. taking a cart, well, I walked with a broken leg", Woods said.

Woods' response was only seven words long and made reference to one of his most famous major victories - the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines that he won in an 18-hole playoff over Rocco Mediate. Now I think it's just maintaining it. "The Black Course is an extremely hard course which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers". Only twice did he intentionally not play between majors.

Last year Daly tweeted to say that he withdrew from the US Senior Open due to the condition, after his request to use a cart was denied. He will be the first player to use a cart since Casey Martin, who was born with circulation problems in his legs, in the 1998 and 2012 U.S. Opens.

Thomas' withdrawal keeps the PGA Championship from having all of the top 100 from the world ranking at Bethpage Black.
