In Memphis, Manziel could get an opportunity to play quickly.
"We are pleased to welcome Johnny Manziel to Alliance of American Football, which we've always described as a league of opportunity for talented players to launch or revitalize their pro football careers", said Head of Football Bill Polian in a statement.
He spent less than a calendar year playing in Canada, first for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, then for the Montreal Alouettes, but on February 27, the league said the former NFL first-round draft choice and 2012 Heisman Trophy victor "contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play" and forced Montreal to cut him from its roster.
He played just two seasons with the team before he was released. Christian Hackenberg started the Express' first three games but was relieved by Zach Mettenberger, who was injured Saturday and replaced by Brandon Silvers. According to a release from the CFL, Manziel "contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league".
He was taken with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 National Football League draft by Cleveland.
Manziel was available to the AAF after the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL released him earlier this month and then said he could not play for any other team in its league.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. He was 2-6 as a starter with the Montreal Alouettes last season, completing 106 of 165 passes (64.2 percent) for 1,290 yards with five TDs and seven interceptions. It said it would not honor a contract signed with any other CFL team but did not disclose Manziel's specific contractual violations. That process has since concluded, and Manziel will join the league immediately. Due to a mechanism within the league's rules, Manziel headed straight to the waiver wire. Manziel had sought treatment for anger management and alcohol abuse as part of his acquittal on a 2016 charge of domestic violence.
Johnny Manziel is officially joining the AAF.
