Murdered mobster Frank Cali 'lured out of home' before being shot

Alleged Gambino Crime Family Boss Frank Cali Shot Dead Outside Home

US mobster shot in first major New York gang killing in more than 30 years

The reputed head of the Gambino crime family has been shot dead outside his home in NY.

The last Mafia boss to be shot to death in New York City was Gambino don "Big Paul" Castellano, assassinated on Gotti's direction while getting out of a black limousine outside a high-end midtown Manhattan steakhouse in 1985.

Cali, thought to have headed the family since 2015, suffered "multiple gunshot wounds to the torso" in front of his home on Staten Island on Wednesday evening, police said.

Cali, 53, was shot several times and run over in front of his brick mansion in the lavish Todt Hill neighborhood at about 9:20 p.m.

Police confirmed the identity of Cali, who was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital.

"There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing", police said. Cali had just one conviction for extortion in 2008. After Gotti went to prison, Cali eventually took over the organization.

Experts agree that Francesco Cali was the individual responsible for consolidating the Gambino family after John Gotti was sent to prison on murder and racketeering in 1992, leaving the mob outfit in a power vacuum so conspicuous, even the casual observer could sense their grip on the criminal underworld was on the fritz. The New York Post reported that Cali had increased the Gambino family's involvement in drug trafficking, particularly in opioids.

According to The Daily Beast, Cali was made acting boss in 2015 after becoming a "made member" of the Gambino family in the late 1990's.

Weiss also adds that it's unlikely that the assassination was organized by any other organized crime family that may still operate in New York City as many have aimed to stay out of the limelight in recent years. "Very surprising, but I guess old habits die hard". His son Salvatore had been shot three months earlier outside the family home, but survived.

Also on Wednesday night, a Gambino family associate of over a decade, Anthony Pandrella, was arrested for robbing and murdering his friend Vincent Zito, 78, the US Attorney's Office in Brooklyn announced Thursday.
