Inter chief executive Giuseppe Marotta told Icardi of the decision

They visit Rapid Vienna in Europa League action on Thursday before hosting Samp in league play on Sunday.

'He was called up for Vienna but he did not want to be there.

The striker has worn the armband since the start of the 2015-16 season but Inter announced on Wednesday afternoon that he would be replaced by goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

"The decision to remove the captain's armband from Icardi was hard and painful, because we all know what he is worth to the team", Spalletti told reporters at his pre-match press conference. It has been a tough, painful decision which he probably has not taken well, made with the team's well-being in mind. After lunch, he informed the club that he didn't feel like coming with us.

It is understood that the decision was a mutual one between the Serie A club and manager Luciano Spalletti.

"The things going on around Icardi have disturbed us, both him and the team which he used to captain". He has not scored in Serie A for seven games.

'Spalletti didn't have it in for me, ' Wanda said. These things embarrass the team that he was captain of.

Inter reportedly took the decision to strip Icardi because he refused to take a stand against his agent's conduct, which was causing tension in the dressing room.

Since arriving from Sampdoria in 2013, Icardi has been a pivotal figure in the club's return to the Champions League.

Icardi, who has eight caps for Argentina, scored 122 goals in 208 appearances for Inter, who are now third in Serie A, 20 points behind leaders Juventus.

In his absence, his compatriot Lautaro Martinez - who scored the victor in a 1-0 victory over Parma at the weekend, is expected to lead the line in Vienna.
