OR governor urges vaccines as measles cases grow to 55

A measles outbreak near Portland Ore. has revived a bitter debate over so-called “philosophical” exemptions to childhood vaccinations. MMR protects against measles mumps and rubella

Washington measles outbreak sends vaccine demand soaring, even among the hesitant

Among the confirmed cases, 43 were not immunized against the highly contagious disease.

Kate Brown urged residents to get vaccinated Thursday as public health officials in OR and Washington reported a combined 56 confirmed cases of measles.

In the United Kingdom, there were 953 measles cases past year.

Separately, five additional cases were confirmed in the Houston metro area Monday, including two boys younger than 2 in Harris County, prompting health officials to urge residents to "protect their children and themselves from this disease by getting vaccinated".

Legislation in the state of NY permits vaccine exemptions for individuals who have religious beliefs against immunization.

Europe had a record number of measles cases a year ago, in part due to a growing number of pockets where parents are refusing to vaccinate their children, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says.

The rush to receive the MMR vaccine - which inoculates the recipient from measles, mumps and rubella - in Clark County is especially striking because the county has an unusually low vaccination rate.

According to Clark County's outbreak investigation statement, all of the confirmed cases are a match of a wild strain of virus that has been circulating through Eastern Europe and is preventable through vaccination.

Only two provinces, Ontario and New Brunswick, require children to have updated vaccination records in order to enter school. One individual reported receiving 1 dose of the MMR vaccine.

The number of people infected with measles in the European region in 2018 is the highest in a decade, the World Health Organization said Thursday. The vaccine takes effect within 72 hours, health officials said. To prevent outbreaks and eliminate measles, countries need to sustain high national and subnational immunization coverage with two doses of measles-containing vaccine, as well as identify and address all pockets of underimmunization among their populations.

What Other Cities Are at Risk?

The latest outbreak of measles started in an anti-vaccination hotspot where only 78 percent of the kindergarten through high school population had gotten their shots.

"During an outbreak is when you see an influx of patients who would otherwise be vaccine-hesitant", said Virginia Ramos, infection control nurse with Sea Mar Community Health Center, which runs six sites that offer vaccines in Clark County. Texas, which allows philosophical and religious vaccine exemptions, has 6 confirmed measles cases in 2019, 3 of which have been confirmed in Harris County.

Canada has had a number of measles outbreaks in recent years.
