Concern Cardiff City signing Emiliano Sala on missing airplane

Missing plane in Alderney Channel Islands

MISSING A Piper Merlin light aircraft right has disappeared over Alderney

A search is on for a small airplane that disappeared over the English Channel Monday night and was carrying an Argentine soccer player to Wales to join his new Premier League club.

The British coastguard said in a statement that it was assisting Guernsey Coastguard with a search for a light aircraft missing off Alderney in the Channel Islands, but that the plane had not yet been found.

But Guernsey police has said in a statement released on Tuesday morning that: "At this time no trace of the missing aircraft had been found".

Guernsey's police force reported that the search started at 20:50 on Monday evening, 20 minutes after the most recent contact with the aircraft, and that the focus was on the area north of Alderney.

The most recent post on his Twitter account was made early on Monday afternoon, in which he posted a picture of him and his former Nantes teammates accompanied by the text: "The last goodbye". The search resumed at 08:00am (12:00pm UAE).

'We are awaiting confirmation before we can say anything further.

"So far over 1,000 square miles have been searched by a total of five aircraft and two lifeboats", Guernsey police said at 1145 GMT.

Club president Waldemar Kita said: "I'll always have hope, he's a fighter".

Choo says "our owner, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, and chairman, Mehmet Dalman, are all very distressed about the situation" and adds "we continue to pray for positive news".

There is "genuine concern" Premier League footballer Emiliano Sala was on a flight missing off Alderney.

Cardiff told the BBC that they are "seeking clarification" over what has happened.

Sala rejected the opportunity to sign mega-deal with a Chinese club and instead penned in a deal with Neil Warnock's side, joining from French outfit Nantes for £15 million (R269 million).

The search was postponed around 2.30 a.m. GMT on Tuesday morning because of hard conditions.

French media are reporting that it has been confirmed that the Argentine was on board the single engine aircraft which took off from Nantes at 7:15pm local time.

The plane went missing over the English Channel, close to the Casquets lighthouse, 13km north-west of Alderney with a rescue effort now underway in the area.

Nantes have also cancelled their French Cup game against Entente SSG, scheduled to be played tomorrow.

Saturday, 19 January: Cardiff confirm their club-record signing of Sala for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £15m. He spent three spells out on loan, including half a season at Caen that convinced Nantes to sign him in the summer of 2015.
