Disgruntled Dallas Mavericks guard Dennis Smith Jr. will rejoin the team for Tuesday's home game against the LA Clippers, coach Rick Carlisle said Sunday via statement. He is feeling better and plans to resume workouts in preparation for his return.
Carlisle reportedly went as far as apologizing to Smith for the ordeal in a recent phone call, sources told The Athletics' Shams Charania.
"I am excited to announce Dennis Smith Jr. will rejoin the team on Tuesday", Carlisle said. "There will be no further updates until Tuesday".
Smith will sit out the Mavs game against the Bucks on Monday before making his return. I am feeling better and had a great workout today.
On Friday, Carlisle announced that Smith would miss the two-game road trip to IN on Saturday and Milwaukee on Monday.
There have also been reports of heavy friction between Carlisle and Smith, while The Dallas Morning News reported that Smith craves a fresh start with a new team.
Smith, averaging 12.6 points in his second season, has missed the past five games as various reports surfaced that the Mavericks have been exploring trade options.
During his weekly show last Friday on ESPN 103.3, Carlisle said he believed Smith was "being told to stay away for whatever reason".
The North Carolina State has plenty of upside and will get the attention of franchises, but the Mavs would be smart to explore fit possibilities for the rest of the season before turning into offseason swap mode.
