News started pushing Kelly out the door just days after she made several comments about whether or not Halloween costumes featuring blackface are offensive.
Her announcement came after NBC terminated her three-year, $69 million contract - but vowed to pay the full value left on her paycheck.
In a statement released by NBC on Saturday, the network said that it had resolved its differences with Kelly and that she was no longer an employee.
Kelly apologized to her colleagues later that day in an internal email, saying, "I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry". Ratings were lackluster on "Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly" and for her morning talk show, "Megyn Kelly Today".
A US TV host who lost her chat show after suggesting it was OK for white people to wear blackface on Halloween has reached an exit deal with the network that employed her.
This contributed to tensions between Kelly and NBC executives, including NBC News chair Andy Lack, who invested tens of millions of dollars in her hiring.
News announced its professional divorce agreement with Megyn Kelly late on Friday (Saturday NZT), ending its association with the former Fox News Channel star. Fox reportedly offered her a new contract worth more than $20 million a year, but Kelly was eager to shed the combative style she honed at the conservative network.
Last September, Kelly publicly contradicted part of Lack's account about why NBC opted not to air Ronan Farrow's reporting about Harvey Weinstein.
"You truly do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface at Halloween or a black person who puts on whiteface for Halloween", she added. "Like, back when I was a kid, that was OK as long as you were dressing up as, like, a character".
Critics accused her of ignoring the ugly history of minstrel shows and movies in which whites applied blackface to mock blacks.
Kelly is not believed to be subject to any "noncompete" clause, which means that in theory she can join another network right away, the sources said.
It's not immediately clear what's next for Kelly.
