In a speech at the United Nations Correspondents Association Awards in NY, the human rights barrister criticised the president for labeling the American press "enemy of the people" as she drew a line between Mr Trump's rhetoric and the rise of populism around the world.

Mrs Clooney, a human rights lawyer who has represented journalists detained in Burma, Egypt and Azerbaijan, drew a link between the president's rhetoric and the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, a Washington Post journalist.

'The chilling effect is real'.

"The U.S. president has given such regimes a green light and labeled the press in this country the 'enemy of the people, '" she said, referencing the torture and assassination of a Washington Post reporter. In October, she skipped Princess Eugenie's wedding because she was one of the keynote speakers at the 2018 Pennsylvania Conference for Women.
