Apple Watch’s fantastic ECG app has finally arrived

watchOS 5.1.2 is Available Today, Brings ECG and Irregular Heartbeat Detection

Electrocardiogram App and Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications Available Today

watchOS 5.1.2 introduces new complications for the Infograph watch face on the Apple Watch Series 4, which take advantage of the model's larger display and can be configured to incorporate shortcuts to apps like Mail, Messages, Maps, Apple News, Phone, Remote, and more. Not anymore. Apple just released its watchOS 5.1.2 update, which adds the highly anticipated ECG app.

Per Macrumors, Apple has told store employees to let customers know that the ECG app is "not meant to be a diagnostic device or to replace traditional methods of diagnosis". The same update will enable irregular rhythm notifications to the Apple Watch. Also, that it "should not be used to monitor or track disease state or change medication without first talking to a doctor", according to Apple's document as cited by Macrumors. Current data shows that anywhere from 2.7 to 6.1 million Americans may suffer atrial fibrillation - a statistic that can be lowered and much more accurately measured with real-time, on-the-go ECG readings. Apple designed it to detect irregular heart rhythms, which could be signs of atrial fibrillation. According to the CDC, AFib is estimated to affect up to two percent of the younger population and almost 10 percent of Americans over the age of 65.

"Apple Watch has helped so many people around the world, and we are humbled that it has become such an important part of our customers' lives", Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer, said in a statement. One of the standout features is the new heart-monitoring hardware that allows the device to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) to monitor electrical activity in the heart.

All ECG information will be securely stored in the Health app for easy sharing with your doctor, while the irregular heart rhythm feature is only on the Watch. To take an ECG, you can just open the ECG app on the Series 4 and hold a finger to the digital crown for 30 seconds. The app also provides an option to export the test as a PDF to share with a physician.

This includes all watches except the original one since it does not officially support watchOS 5 and support for it was axed when the latest software update was released.
