According to known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via 9to5Mac), the demand for the AirPods will grow drastically in the coming years. If Apple has a pleasant surprise waiting for us with the introduction of the updated silicon, we will be waiting to see what they have been working on.
He further suggested that along with the much anticipated wireless case, Apple is also updating its first-gen AirPods internally. There has also been some speculation claiming that an entirely new AirPods model due next year will introduce features such as water resistance and noise cancelation.
Kuo reportedly referred to the new update as a 'model with wireless charging support,' which could mean that Apple plans to finally release the wireless charging case it first announced in 2017. Apple is expected to sell the new AirPods carrying case as a separate item for current AirPods only. To support this ambition, the case will come with an upgraded hinge, and with a few more expensive internal components.
Thanks to Ming-Chi Kuo's report, we know that wireless charging of AirPods is still available.
The wireless Apple Airpods, otherwise known as the "I have a new iPhone please rob me" earphones, are rumoured to be getting a wireless charging upgrade sometime in 2019 and an "all-new design" sometime in 2020. He forecasts a huge growth for them and predicts the 16 million units that Apple shipped in 2017 will rise to over 100 million units by 2021. Part of this would be the use of Bluetooth 5, the latest version of the technology that will improve power usage and the signal's reliability and range.
