And it is true that Ocasio-Cortez easily won the general election on November 6.

As a result, Pelosi said in a statement that she "recommended to my House Democratic colleagues that we reinstate the select committee to address the climate crisis" - partly to mollify Ocasio-Cortez. "We digged deep and we did it", Ocasio-Cortez remarked. "We went to the moon", she added.

Rep. -elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been mocked by her critics for her many gaffes, but her latest weird comment is just confusing to many people.

Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat, is one of a number of incoming Representatives pushing for Medicare for all.

But do these accomplishments really rank among such iconic American accomplishments as the moon landing and the establishment of civil rights?

"We did it when no one else thought we could".

"That's what we did when so many of us won an election this year!" she said.

It is true that Ocasio-Cortez pulled off a stunning primary upset victory this summer against 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.), the heavily funded 56-year-old chairman of the House Democratic Caucus.

She is also calling on members of Congress to refuse political contributions from companies that mine, pump, refine or sell fossil fuels. She was advocating for a "Green New Deal" to combat the effects of global warming.

During a press conference meant to publicize her support of a Green New Deal, a nebulous government spending plan promoting ideas backed by lawmakers like Sen.

But in an area of the Bronx and Queens that's home to 214,750 active registered Democratic voters, only 27,744 cast ballots in the primary. Fewer than 16,000 voted for Ocasio-Cortez.
