Avenatti has been a thorn in the side of the USA president as the attorney for Stormy Daniels, who is suing Trump to invalidate a non-disclosure agreement made days before the 2016 presidential election over an alleged sexual encounter she had with him.
The alleged domestic violence incident could dash Avenatti's prospects as a potential insurgent Democratic candidate and clash with the image he has presented of himself as an advocate for women, including Daniels in her clash with Trump and an accuser against recently confirmed Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
According to TMZ, the lawyer is behind bars for domestic violence.
News reports say Avenatti was taken into custody at 3:44 PM in the 10000 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, after a woman filed a felony domestic violence police report. We're told he will be released on $50,000 bail. Ms. Storie-Avenatti was not subject to any such incident on Tuesday night. TMZ also said that Avenatti soon showed up and was heard to scream, "She hit me first". Further, she was not at Mr. Avenatti's apartment on the date that this alleged incident occurred. He told reporters waiting outside the station, "I have never struck a woman". More recently Senator Chuck Grassley referred Avenatti and Swetnick to the DOJ for criminal investigation over allegedly making false statements. And they will be refunding all ticket sales. He said the party "wasn't going to step in that arena" as a result of the arrest.
Michael Avenatti has often hinted that he wants to run for president.
