Taylor's hustle in running to first, which helped cause the error, advancing to second and then stealing third was nearly infectious, as a series of little things helped the Dodgers win a second consecutive playoff game without hitting a home run. Milwaukee scored in the fifth and was held scoreless for the next eight frames.
The righty Woodruff had entered in the first inning after lefty starter Wade Miley (a decoy in what all along was a planned bullpen game for the Brewers) walked Cody Bellinger leading off and departed. There were just two things the Dodgers could be sure of, two very important things, and that was that Kershaw allowed one run on three hits in a 5-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.
The slumping Bellinger, who began the night 1 for 21 in these playoffs, was chased all the way into left field by teammates.
The Brewers had a prime opportunity to take a commanding 3-1 series lead, but couldn't get it done against countless Dodgers relievers. "I've learned a lot". Orlando Arcia flied out to left, with Chris Taylor and Bellinger almost colliding before Taylor made a sliding catch. The Brewers were up only 1-0 at the time, but there have been moments in this series where that has seemed like an insurmountable deficit for the Dodgers.
The Brewers had a chance in the ninth against closer Kenley Jansen. Milwaukee got only two runners to third base, none after the seventh inning. Kershaw struck out Jesus Aguilar to end the third, the first of 13 consecutive batters that the left-hander retired. Both benches and bullpens emptied, but no punches were thrown.
Machado said the two go back to their time in the minors.
After the game, Aguilar's teammates were critical of Machado's play, but Aguilar said the two talked it out when Machado singled in the 13th. "Everything that happens on the field stays on the field". Kershaw allowed four earned runs in three innings, in what was the shortest playoff start of his career.
In another move, the Brewers added right-hander Zach Davies to the NLCS roster, replacing Gio Gonzalez, who left Game 4 with a high left ankle sprain. Milwaukee promptly won its final seven regular-season games and an NL Central tiebreaker against the Chicago Cubs to earn its first division title since 2011, and the Brewers did more than enough at the plate in a sweep of Colorado in the Division Series.
Ryan Braun finished 3-for-6 in Tuesday night's loss at the Dodgers. His other start came in Game 3 of the NLDS at Colorado. Cody Bellinger scored, to bring the score to Dodgers 5, Brewers 1.
