The Heat: U.S. sanctions China military Pt1

Authorities in China have called for the denunciation of the United States by the USA ambassador in Beijing for imposing new economic sanctions on a Chinese military organization.

China has had discussions with the United States about USA plans to make some Chinese state media groups register as foreign agents, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday, calling on Washington not to put up barriers to reporting.

Russian Federation sold Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets and a S-400 surface-to-air missile system to China, which has not joined USA sanctions against Russian Federation for its actions in Ukraine and interference in the US political system.

Beijing seems to be the first export customer of the S-400 to be slapped with United States sanctions over its planned purchase of the system after months of failure by Washington to persuade allies to drop interest in similar deals.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has also criticized the US.

On Thursday Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in consultation with Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin, imposed sanctions on the Chinese military's Equipment Development Department, which is responsible for improving military technology, and its head, Li Shangfu, and added them to a list of people whose assets in the USA are frozen.

"India has made it clear to the US that it will go ahead with the S-400 purchase and other defense deals with Russian Federation", he said.

China has bought Russian Su-35 fighter jets in defiance of U.S. sanctions against the Russian Federation.

The move came hours after China canceled trade talks with the US following Washington's imposition of new tariffs on Chinese goods.

"This is unfair competition, dishonest competition, an attempt to use non-market methods that that run counter to norms and principles of worldwide trade to squeeze the main competitor of U.S. makers out of the markets", said President Vladimir Putin's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, according to Al Jazeera.

United States officials said the imposition of penalties against China was the first time a third-party country was punished under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, the sanctions law passed in 2017. "Otherwise, the US side will have to bear all the consequences".

China's EED was added to the blacklist together with 33 Russian defense and intelligence officials and entities.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that while there was no confirmed meeting between the United States and China, the two countries "remain in touch". Further, China has also invalidated trade talks, which were scheduled for the current week in Washington.

The State Department noted the imposition of sanctions was due to Beijing's "significant transactions" with Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport. "We demand that the U.S. immediately correct the mistake and revoke the so-called sanctions, otherwise the United States must bear the consequences", the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The two countries will launch new tariffs on Monday, with Washington targeting $200 billion in Chinese exports and Beijing hitting $60 billion worth of American products. Mr. Li will also be barred from getting a USA visa.
