Idris Elba's filmography proves that he can play any role he damn well wants to.

Fuqua detailed a conversation he had with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli at the launch of his new business venture, SoundFi, and said Broccoli felt that the time had come for an actor of an ethnic background to play the legendary spy and felt that it was not an "if" but a "when". Fuqua responded that the transition "will happen eventually", going on to suggest Elba as the frontrunner for the part.

Elba's name has always been tossed around as an ideal candidate.

He added: "Idris could do it if he was in shape". You need a guy with physically strong presence.

Elba also plays the title role in British crime drama Luther, voiced Chief Bogo in Zootopia, plays Heimdall in the Marvel movies, and famously cancelled the apocalypse in 2013's Pacific Rim. Back in 2016 he called it the "wildest rumor in the world" and wondered if he was too old for the role.

Director Antoine Fuqua chatted to Barbara about who will take over from Daniel Craig, 50, if he hangs up his gun after the next Bond film, due next year.

But Craig, who's played the secret agent since 2005, still has one more film to make.

The latest Bond film is scheduled to reach United Kingdom cinemas on October 25, 2019.
