I was sitting in the bed. "I was on a Pitocin drip, and the doctor came in and said, 'You've tested positive for opiates, '" Eden told WBAL.
After the hospital realized that Eden's drug test was a false-positive, her case worker closed the file.
She had heard in a school health class that consuming poppy seeds could cause a false positive, but that was certainly not on her mind when she gave birth at St. Joseph Medical Center on April 4.
- Many remember when the 90s hit show "Seinfeld" made light of "the poppy seed defense", the claim that when you eat poppy seeds, a drug test can come back positive. "And I ate a poppy seed bagel this morning for breakfast, ' and she said, 'No, you've been reported to the state, '" Eden said. "Until tests are sophisticated to differentiate a benign seed from a serious street drug", he says. "I said, 'Well, can you test me again?" "Opium is the milky substance that is extracted along with the poppy seeds from the seed pod of the opium poppy after all the petals have fallen off".
The test result meant Eden's daughter had to stay in the hospital for five days while her mother was assigned a case worker.
Drug tests can produce positive results after a person ingests just one teaspoon of poppy seeds, causing their morphine levels to register at 1,200 nanograms per millimeter.
Eden is hoping to warn new parents about poppy seeds so others don't have to go through what she did.
