UAE has formed the moon-sighting committee for determining the day of Eid Al Fitr. If the moon is spotted on Thursday night, the first day of Shawwal will be on Friday which will also be the first day of Eid Al Fitr.

Islam follows the lunar calendar, based on phases of the Moon. Free parking in Dubai will be activated on 29 Ramadan (Thursday June 14) and applies until 3 Shawaal 1439H (Sunday June 17). People are already gearing up to celebrate Eid al-Fitr with great zeal and happiness.

Last week, Oman's government declared that both private and public sector workers in the country will be off from Thursday, June 14 until Monday, June 18. According to astronomical parameters, there is a "slight" chance of sighting the new moon on Thursday. However, the number of days in the month is only established after sighting of the moon.

The date of Eid ul-Fitr typically varies from country to country, depending on whether the moon has been seen. Many Muslims recite the takbir (declaration of faith) on the way to the prayer ground and take part in Zakat al-Fitr or charitable contributions.

The holiday comes after the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan when muslims are called to observe one of the pillars of Islam-fasting.
