While Salah has talked up his hopes of starting against Uruguay in Yekaterinburg, Ehab Lehita, the Egyptian FA's managing director, said: "We're keeping an eye on the situation day by day".

Despite Salah's incredible season, his campaign on a sour note when he was forced off with injury in Liverpool's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid last month in Kiev.

On Monday, Egypt's medical staff stated they remained unsure whether he would be fit for their opening game as he did not take part in a training session.

But such has been his form for Liverpool, with 44 goals in all competitions this season, that he was included in the Egypt squad simply on the off-chance he could play.

Their group also includes Saudi Arabia and host Russian Federation.

Officially, The Pharaohs chose Grozny as Egypt's camp although it is not hosting any matches in the tournament to keep a low profile, away from the media, as they prepare to make their World Cup finals return after an absence of 28 long years.

"I'm excited. God willing I'm well-prepared and things are going well and my morale is high", he told AFP on Sunday.

However Egypt team doctor Mohamed Abou El-Ela placed some caution on any hopes Salah will play a part against Uruguay in their Group A opener this Friday.

Salah is regarded as a contender for the Ballon d'Or, alongside Argentina's Lionel Messi, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar of Brazil.
