The bone of contention was that Saini, a Karnal-born medium pacer, had not represented Delhi in age group cricket and was thus seen as an "outsider".Gambhir used the word "outsider" in his tweet to target Bedi and Chauhan on social media, a day after Saini was included as a late replacement for Mohammed Shami in the India Test squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan.
Gambhir's message turned out to be a sarcastic dig at the duo as they had expressed their reservations over Saini's selection in the Delhi Ranji Team in 2013.
Shami, who was slated to play the Test against Afghanistan, failed the fitness test. Saini, 25, has taken 96 wickets from 31 first-class matches, most famously bowling Delhi into the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy final; he finished the season with 34 wickets in eight matches.
Despite all odds, Saini proved his worth by being a consistent wicket-taker for Delhi side and got picked in the Test squad now. I did what he told me and today I am here because of him.
However, Gambhir and some other senior players had fully supported Saini and the selectors had to finally bow down. Gambhir after watching him bowl for 15 minutes had decided that Saini was a rare talent, who should be groomed properly.
Bedi, who has been Gambhir's fierce critic on and off the field, had then questioned how an outsider could get into the Delhi team.
However, known for being stubborn, Gambhir got him into the team despite revolt from a notorious section of DDCA officials, who had distributed pamphlets, questioning Saini's eligibility, when he was marking his run-up for his first ever over in Ranji against Vidarbha.
"I remember every tiny little thing". I know what Gautam bhaiya had to go through to convince selectors that I was good enough to play for Delhi. "Not to forget Ashish Nehra, Mithun Manhas, Sumit Narwal, who all stood by me", he added. In fact, after first few matches, he (Gambhir) said that if I keep working hard at every practice session, I will play for India. He saw in me before I realized myself.
