Macedonia and Greece PMs Agree on a New Name

FYROM has “no alternative to NATO and the EU”

Macedonia, Greece Close to Ending Decades-Old Dispute Over Name

Zaev met his Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras on the sidelines of the EU-Western Balkans summit in Sofia.

Macedonia's North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and European Union accession process has been blocked by Greece which disputes the former Yugoslav republic's name, saying it implies a territorial claim over its northern province with the same name. Athens has reportedly prepared a package of its own concessions that will also aim to maintain the distinct identity of FYROM's residents.

"But, it depends on both sides, depends on the institutions, depends on the other participants, like the presidents of the countries, leaders of the opposition, other political leaders and, finally, on the citizens of both countries", Zaev added.

Despite that, if a solution is not reached by June, the two countries will continue their efforts to resolve the dispute, Zaev said.
