The saga of Adnan Syed, who was convicted of the murder of 18-year old Hae Min Lee in 1999, captivated the nation as the focus Sarah Koenig's inaugural season of Serial, which nevertheless left many questions unanswered about the odd, labyrinthian crime.
Podcasters became obsessed with the case of Adnan Syed through Serial, which investigated the disappearance of 18-year-old Baltimore County high school student Hae Min Lee.
Syed's story was widely publicized in the 2014 "Serial" podcast, which cast doubt on his guilt and inspired armchair investigators to unearth new information.
The documentary will re-examine the events that led of to Lee's disappearance from "high school romance, forbidden love and cultural conflict, to the aftermath of her disappearance, the original police investigation and the present day, when Syed awaits a new trial".
The series promises "new discoveries, as well as groundbreaking revelations that challenge the state's case" in Syed's trial.
Sky's director of programming Zai Bennett added, "We'll be offering viewers a compelling window into one of the most talked about murder cases in recent years".
Nick Cave will also be providing an original soundtrack for the series, which is yet to receive a release date.
