Israel vows tit-for-tat response for any attack from Iran

Israel's Minister of Defence has vowed to destroy any "Iranian foothold" in Syria, and even strike Tehran if Tel Aviv is attacked.

Avigdor Lieberman tells Elaph: "We hear many (Iranian) threats ... but if they attack Tel Aviv we will strike Tehran".

The comments came as Lieberman visited Washington to meet US National Security Adviser John Bolton and other officials to discuss what his office called Iran's "expansion" in the Middle East.

Israel would retaliate against any Iranian attack on Tel Aviv by striking Tehran, Israel's defense minister said in remarks published on Thursday.

"John Bolton is a loyal friend of Israel, who is very knowledgeable about the Iranian threat".

Israel and Saudi Arabia have grown increasingly close since the rise of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a development Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu frequently alludes to in boasts about growing friendship with Arab states.

There has been a spike in hostile rhetoric between the bitter rivals since an airstrike on a military base in Syria that Iran and Russian Federation blamed on Israel.

Bolton is known to be fiercely hostile to Iran, strongly pushing for withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and taking military action against the country. "I am glad that Americans appreciate what is happening in the middle East as well as we do, and grateful to the United States government for its support of Israel", - Israeli Minister was quoted by his press service.

While it is rare for an Israeli official to be interviewed by a Saudi media outlet, this is not the first time that Elaph has given an Israeli official a platform to address the Arab world.
