Cathy Yan has been tapped to direct a spinoff based on crazed supervillain Harley Quinn. The movie will be based on the "Birds of Prey" comic with Margot Robbie attached to star. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the DC slate as we learn it.
This lineup immediately establishes the Harley Quinn movie as a lady-centric affair, and makes this the second DCU movie to be directed by a woman, following the outstanding worked turned in by Patty Jenkins on Wonder Woman.
Yan, a former reporter for the Wall Street Journal, will become the first Asian woman to direct a DC superhero film.
Yan will team up with screenwriter Christina Hodson - who was recently hired to revive Joss Whedon's abandoned Batgirl project - and Robbie will produce the film via her LuckyChap Entertainment production company.
This is an historic move for Warner Bros. and DC - and a definitive win over Marvel Studios. The film takes inspiration from the Birds of Prey comic, which typically features a trio of female heroes like Black Canary, Batgirl, and Huntress.
The film is looking to start production within the year.
Dead Pigs won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance last January and Robbie was keen to bag a female director for Birds Of Prey.
There are a lot of Harley Quinn-centric films in development, as Robbie herself has said. She wrote and directed numerous short films before stepping up to features with Dead Pigs. Harley Quinn Vs The Joker and Gotham City Sirens are also in the works at Warner Brothers.
