National Weather Service confirms EF2 tornado in Lynchburg

According to National Weather Service records, this is the first time a tornado has been confirmed in the county. Forecasts predict rain will fall until about 8 a.m. Monday. Damage was not catastrophic in any community and the wind speeds were on the lower end for tornadoes, but the twisters blew debris onto county roads, damaged some buildings and left some people white-knuckle driving.

The only Lowcountry county under a tornado watch until 11 p.m. was Williamsburg County.

Some roads were blocked by downed trees and power lines, and traffic lights were either knocked down or destroyed.

The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida has confirmed an EF-1 hit Decatur County on Sunday.

The weather service estimated that the tornado injured 12 people.

The weather service in SC said tornadoes also hit Lexington and Irmo, but no serious injuries were reported. There were no injuries from that brief storm.

To the north, Boston Marathon contestants ran in a drenching rain with temperatures in the mid-30s and wind gusts above 30 miles per hour (48 kph). As the tornado continued into Chicot County, two sets of wooden transmission poled were found snapped and a mobile home sustained damage.

"It was very unnerving to be in a vehicle out in the storm", Turner said.

Gov. Ralph Northam declared a state of emergency Monday morning to aid state and local response to Sunday night's storms.

According to a post-survey report issued by the weather service, two dogs in that neighborhood were "either displaced or lofted over 100 yards when their respective pens were destroyed".

Hail reports were less common than damaging wind reports, but hailstones up to the size of tennis balls fell near Hillsville in Carroll County.
