Seahawks will reportedly release Malik McDowell, last year's top draft pick

McDowell, who was picked by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft (No. 35 overall), will be released soon, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported Monday night.

"Nothing new", Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said of McDowell, per The Seattle Times. McDowell was a top-20 prospect on talent alone coming out of Michigan State in 2017, but fell in the draft due to off-field concerns, which now appear warranted.

However, an ATV accident in July of a year ago left McDowell with a severe concussion and ultimately sidelined for the entire season. Instead, they'll allow him to test free agency and see whether another team will pick him up and try to medically clear him.

McDowell, the Seattle Seahawks' first pick of the draft past year, is expected to be released by the team soon, the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Monday. McDowell was then arrested last December for disorderly conduct in Atlanta.

With no McDowell, Michael Bennett or Sheldon Richardson, and potentially the loss of Cliff Avril as well, it's no surprise the team signed free agents Tom Johnson and Shamar Stephen this offseason.
