Ford Fiesta ST to join NZ line-up

Ford has announced its Ford Performance sub-brand is coming to Australia, headlined by the confirmation of the Mustang entering the 2019 Supercars championship.

Quick forward to the Mustang's 54th birthday celebration and the notorious muscle auto is the top-rated sports vehicle on the planet for 2017.

The technical details of the race-ready Mustang have not yet been released.

For the third year in a row, the Ford Mustang is the world's best-selling sports coupe. Built in Germany and based on the highly-praised seventh-generation Fiesta - the current World Rally Champion with Ford Performance partner, UK-based M-Sport - the 2019 Fiesta ST is powered by a 147kW [i] three-cylinder turbocharged engine from Ford's award- and race-winning EcoBoost engine line-up, matched exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission.

As rumoured past year, the Mustang will enter Australia's biggest racing series.

Ford Australia boss Graeme Whickman wouldn't be drawn on whether the arrangements with Penske and Tickford constituted a "factory effort", saying that it is a "partnership" but MOTOR understands Ford Performance is heavily involved with the development of the Mustang racer. In China the Ford Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe previous year with 7,125 registrations.

Racing legend and co-owner of DJR Team Penske, Dick Johnson, joked that he "wouldn't be caught" in any other vehicle, after speculation Ford would sign on.

"The Mustang nameplate is one the of the most legendary in the world and we are proud to have it lining up on our grid in 2019", Mr Seamer said.

"I know Australians, New Zealanders and our fans around the world will be just as excited as I am to see the Mustang take to our tracks in the world's best Touring auto racing". "For years, Mustang was unobtainable for customers on most parts of the planet".

To celebrate Mustang's popularity, and to mark its 54anniversary, Ford Middle East unveiled a stunning mosaic made of up of hundreds of regional Mustang fan photos neatly arranged to form the Pony car's iconic emblem, an exceptionally unique creation presented for the first time ever in the region.

"Throughout the entire history of this team, we've never run anything but a Ford, and this announcement today is fantastic", Johnson said at the launch.
