Police have arrested 20-year-old Binghamton University Student Michael Roque in connection with the stabbing of 19-year-old Binghamton University engineering student Joao Souza Sunday night on campus.

The suspect, who was apprehended Monday, is being held at Broome County Jail and is due back at Vestal Town Court later this week.

Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell said, "We spoke to many witnesses and many leads were developed and still had to be followed up on".

Joao Souza, 19, was stabbed in Windham Hall around 10:30 an individual described in a Monday news release as a "light-skinned male wearing dark trousers and a dark, Puma hooded sweatshirt".

Investigators from university and the state police interviewed people overnight. A university tweet asked people to be on the lookout for a male in a dark Puma hooded sweatshirt and dark trousers. "Thank you to everyone who provided tips and info".

"For the second time this semester we've struggled to absorb the news that one of our students has been killed", university vice president Brian Rose said.

Souza was from Brazil, university officials told reporters at a Monday news conference. "Our sympathies go out to his friends and family, as well as to his classmates and peers". On March 9, the body of Haley Anderson, of Westbury on Long Island, was found in the off-campus apartment of a fellow student she had briefly dated.

Her ex-boyfriend, 22-year-old Orlando Tercero, fled to his native Nicaragua, where he was arrested and is awaiting extradition.
