Eurovision diva Conchita Wurst reveals she is HIV-positive

Conchita Wurst, the bearded Austrian drag queen who became a gay rights icon after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014, said in an Instagram post late on Sunday that she is HIV-positive.

The former Eurovision victor, real name Tom Neuwirth, spoke for the first time on Monday about their HIV status in an emotional German-language Instagram post.

Her full (translated) statement says: "Today is the day to free me from the Sword of Damocles for the rest of my life: I have been HIV positive for many years". "That is actually irrelevant to the public, but an ex-boyfriend threatened to reveal this private information". I am well in my health, stronger and more active since then, since I have been treated since diagnosis and the virus is below the limits of detection now in my blood.

"Likewise, my friends have been aware of this for quite some time and are dealing with it in an unbiased way that I would wish to everyone and everyone concerned".

"Coming out is better than being outed by someone else". I hope to give courage and take another step against the stigmatization of the people who are infected. "Thank you for your support!"
