The new full-size sedan, dubbed EQ S, will be part of the Daimler AG unit's push to introduce 10 all-electric vehicles by 2022, Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche said Wednesday during the presentation of the revamped Mercedes A-Class hatchback in Split, Croatia.
An electric charging plug sits connected to a Mercedes GLC F-Cell plug-in hybrid automobile in Germany. "All vehicles will be electrified", Zetsche said. New digital offerings coupled with high costs of developing battery powered cars as well as the possibilities of trade barriers in China and USA, two of the largest markets for Mercedes, has somewhat threatened the profit margins of the company. He reiterated it is too early to comment on potential risks from trade barriers, adding that recent developments in Russian Federation related to stricter planned USA sanctions coincided with more encouraging signals in China about potentially easing rules for outside investors. Varying price tiers will determine what vehicles a subscriber has access to, as we presume that the tire-torturing AMG performance models (Mercedes says they will be available) might be limited to applicants willing to pay for higher subscription tiers. He further added that Mercedes has good relationship with BAIC in China and it will meet China's planned quota for electric cars.
When asked to comment on the increase of opportunities in China, he reiterated that Mercedes will welcome additional opportunities.
As long as Daimler safeguards it's now existing joint-venture partner, the Chinese BAIC Motor Corp, the company is open to accepting many ways to cooperate with its new largest investor, Li Shufu.
As Mercedes expands its compact cars lineup, from five to eight, it sees the potential for a "significant lift in volumes". Adding smaller, affordable models like the GLA compact crossover and the CLA coupe helped Mercedes lure younger buyers from rivals and that trend is expected to continue with the revamped A-Class hatchback, he said.
