Severe weather threat has Maury schools closing early

Vestavia Hills City Schools will close early today due to the threat of severe weather.

According to the same EMA alert, Cleveland City Schools will close today on this schedule: Elementary schools at 12:30 p.m. and secondary schools at 1:30 p.m.

All regular bus routes will run for these early closings.

The National Weather Service has advised thunderstorms are expected to develop around 3 p.m.

Official notifications will be released through NIXLE.

Also, all after-school activities, including athletic practices and games and the after-school care program, are canceled for this afternoon and tonight, officials said.

The National Weather Service says there is an enhanced risk of strong tornadoes, hail the size of tennis balls and damaging winds up to 70 miles per hour for central Alabama between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m.
