The incident occurred after Congress MLAs started creating ruckus and rushed to the well as their MLA from Jamnagar Vikram Maadam was not allowed to raise a point of order. "I was of the view of suspending the errant legislators for five years but the ruling party appears to be soft and has sought only three years' suspension", Trivedi said.
The Speaker also adjourned the House for 15 minutes.
The commotion began during a discussion over tabling of the report of Justice DK Trivedi Commission in the Asaram Bapu case, The Hindu reported.
Senior Congress legislator Vikram Madam tried to raise a question and participate in the issue but was repeatedly shouted down by the members from treasury benches. "Our members were not allowed to speak in the House and when they tried, they were provoked by the ruling party members", said Leader of the Opposition Paresh Dhanani. Der questioned the Speaker's intention, for which he received a warning from the Speaker. Panchal said his comments were not directed at Der, but Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor alleged that the BJP MLA hurled abuses at Der. Dudhat was pushed towards the floor of the house and many BJP MLAs were seen kicking him brutally.
Madam and Der were later suspended for one day by the speaker. This enraged Dudhat, who yanked out his desk microphone and allegedly hit Panchal with it.
According to the BJP, which has 99 legislators in the 182-member assembly, the Congress MLAs planned the assault in order prevent the House from functioning. "There were women legislators sitting there and I am willing to resign as a legislator if it is proved that I did speak foul words", he said.
