Nikolas Cruz, the 19-year-old who has confessed to opening fire at a high school in Parkland, Florida, spewed racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic views in a private Instagram group chat. In one part of the group chat, Cruz wrote that he hated, "jews, ni**ers, immigrants".
He entered the school earlier this week in a Stoneman Douglas JROTC shirt carrying an AR-15 assault rifle. A former student at the school, he was expelled for "disciplinary reasons". He has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.
CNN reported the news outlet was invited to a messaging group by an active member, although none of the participants have confirmed their identities.
During one of the anti-Semitic rants in the chat, Cruz spoke of his birth mother, saying, "My real mom was a Jew".
According to CNN, Cruz joined the private chat around August 2017 and mainly conversed with five of its members. He also said that he hated Jews because he believed they wanted to destroy the world.
Cruz purchased his rifle a year ago and also owned at least 4 more weapons, purchased legally, according to CNN.
Then he asked the group whether it was legal to wear body armor to school.
When someone asked why he wanted to know, he reportedly replied: "school shooters".
At another point in the conversation, Cruz wrote: "I think I am going to kill people". When he was told by the others not to make such comments, he said he was just joking.
In his first message to the chat group, Cruz bragged about writing a letter to President Donald Trump - and receiving a response. CNN reached out to the White House for comment about any correspondence to and from Cruz but has not heard back.
In another message, Cruz posted about killing animals saying that he killed a number of birds with his gun.
Some members of the chat were anxious he might have killed endangered animals.
CNN also reports that Cruz was the one who gave the chat its name. "All (I know) is that he likes guns and really hates liberals".
