Spectacular lava "fireworks" shooting from its crater are drawing tourists to the Philippines' most active volcano, authorities said Tuesday as scientists warned of a potential unsafe eruption within days.

More than 900 families from 16 neighborhoods in the vicinity of the volcano were moved to shelters in neighboring towns, CNN Philippines quoted the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Coordinating Council (NDRRMC) as reporting. However, Solidum added that the activity so far may not lead to an explosive eruption."Sometimes this eruption activity need not really result (in) very explosive eruptions".

On 13 January 2018 at 4:21 PM, Mayon Volcano generated a phreatic eruption (steam-driven) that propelled a grayish steam and ash plume approximately 2500 m high that was drifted to the southwest.

On Tuesday, an 81-year-old man who was among more than 2,000 displaced residents in Tabaco City was found dead in a school building that was used as an evacuation centre.

Mount Mayon has a near flawless cone and considered as one of the most active volcanoes in the country. "We can't see the lava flow because now the volcano is surrounded by clouds".

Mount Mayon, a volcano in the coconut-growing central Bicol region that draws tourists because of its near-perfect cone shape, has shown increased restiveness since Saturday, displacing thousands of residents.

Locals were told to not enter the six kilometer-radius permanent danger zone and seven-kilometer extended danger zone on the southern flanks due to danger of rockfalls, sudden explosion, or dome collapse. It has a long history of minor to major eruptions, most recently in 2014. Almost 200,000 people live in the city and are being warned that a hazardous eruption could take place within weeks, or even days.

Phivolcs science research specialist Eric Arconado saidAlert Level 3 remains over Mayon, meaning hazardous eruption is imminent within weeks or days.

While so far no one has been harmed by the volcanic activity, officials say that the presence of lava indicates that a new lava dome is being formed and that because of this the evacuation zones must be enforced.

Scientists said it was highly unlikely Mayon would have a similar eruption. At least 1,200 people were killed and the nearby town of Cagsawa was buried in volcanic mud.
