With CES coming fast, more and more juicy tech morsels are eeking their way out into the news.
Google is really betting high on its Google Assistant, which is now available on nearly any contemporary Android device, a ton of existing and new smart speakers, and soon coming to an automobile near you.
An assortment of speakers and sound bars naturally showed off Alexa integration, but so did desktops, laptops, phones, routers, TVs, cars, headphones, washers, dryers, refrigerators, light switches, smoke alarms, toilets, and even exhaust vents.
According to people with familiar with Google's plan, the company is concerned about losing market share to Amazon. Both screens are HD: the smaller one has a 1,200 x 800 resolution, while the larger model has a Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 display.
"We'll have to see how that works out", Google's Scott Huffman, a Google VP, said. With a display, Google Assistant will be able to play a YouTube video, search for map directions, call a cab and track it, as well as pull up images through Google Photos.
In summary, Amazon is looking at Alexa not just as a virtual assistant for speakers, but as a robust smart home platform. Amazon's Echo, the first smart speaker on the market, was introduced in November 2014. The 8 Inch variant of Lenovo's Smart Display is available at $199.99. Sure, there are other digital assistants like Cortana and Siri out there, but Alexa and Google Assistant appear to be the more dominant platforms.
Over the last couple of days we've seen entires from JBL and Lenovo and now it's time for LG to show its hand. For now, they will rely on their partners Lenovo, LG, JBL, and Sony to produce the displays. The notch on the top is most likely a shutter for the camera or a mute button for the microphone, we don't know yet, but we'll keep you updated.
