Not long after the Astros spent the afternoon at a jam-packed Minute Maid Park for the annual Fanfest, general manager Jeff Luhnow was able to finalize a major trade to land starting pitcher Gerrit Cole from the Pirates.
Pirates acquired RHP Michael Feliz, RHP Joe Musgrove, 3B Colin Moran and OF Jason Martin from the Astros for RHP Gerrit Cole. "Acquiring these four quality young players, three of whom we project to be an important part of our 2018 team, with many years of potential contribution, is an important step for us as we work toward bringing playoff baseball back to our fans".
That remains his best year as he's managed to only win 19 games the last two years combined.
Musgrove, 25, was 7-8 with a 4.77 ERA in 38 appearances, 15 of them starts, last season for the Astros. He put up career lows in several categories last season, including ERA, home run rate and FIP.
Cole, 27 was 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA and 196 strikeouts in 2017.
On Friday, Cole and the Pirates agreed to a one-year contract worth $6.75 million to avoid arbitration.
Three years later, the Pirates selected him with the first overall pick. He hit.308 with 18 home runs and 63 RBIs in 79 games with Triple-A Fresno.
Moran, however, is the centerpiece of the trade from Houston's side-as he finished last season ranked as the organization's No. 5 overall prospect.
