Natalie Portman points at all-male Best Director nominees at Golden Globes

Natalie Portman and Ron Howard followed Oprah Winfrey's passionate Cecil B. DeMille Award acceptance speech, which focused heavily on gender and racial equality, by announcing the victor for best motion picture director at Sunday night's Golden Globes.

Many celebs and fans took to Twitter to praise Portman for savaging the awards, where winners' speeches were dominated by the call for equality. After Howard introduced the category they would be presenting, Portman remarked: "And here are the all-male nominees". "And here are the all MALE nominees", she quipped, to knowing laughter.

Toro, who looked a tad flustered, won the award for The Shape of Water, a Cold War-era monster movie and remixed fairy tale musical, starring Sally Hawkins and Michael Shannon.

Natalie Portman, right, and America Ferrera arrive at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night.
