TiVo's DVRs Now Support Alexa & Google Assistant

At CES 2018, Google announced the support for Google Assistant for Smart Displays. This redesign will place Google Assistant at the centre of it the company's digital retail experience. The company has installed a giant booth outside CES and taken out sponsorship of the Las Vegas Monorail. While it may quote 400 million devices with Assistant access, most are Android smartphones rather than the smart speakers or other devices that we've seen Alexa proliferate on.

Now, sources tell Bloomberg, Google is looking to further catch up to Amazon's system.

Lenovo's teamed up with Google to create a rival to Amazon's Echo Show.

"When these devices detect the wake word, they stream audio to the cloud, including a fraction of a second of audio before the wake word", Amazon's website reads. Lenovo's Smart Display, for instance - our Best IoT/Smart Home award victor this year - pairs the AI technology with two different sizes of touchscreen, aiming to conquer a place on the kitchen counter that until now might have been home to an Amazon Echo Show.

New research has come out that looks at the number of Americans that own a smart speaker along the lines of the Amazon Echo or Google Home devices. But, for the most part, your auto will still respond to the same commands in the same way. 30% of smart speaker owners said that the device replaced some of the time they spent with their TV and 71% of people use the devices to listen to news and podcasts.

Google has spent the past year bringing Assistant to over 400 million devices as it aims to make its virtual assistant available pretty much everywhere.

Both companies usually shun conventions like CES, preferring to debut gadgets at their own press events.

According to sources close to the matter, Google is toying with the idea of launching a revamped online store in February. Dubbed simply "Lenovo Smart Display", this Google Assistant-based smart speaker offers the convenience of an either 8 or 10-inch screen to facilitate deeper, more intuitive interaction between the user (s), and Google's Assistant. Now, users have been able to issue voice commands to Android Auto in the past, but that was simply to invoke Google Voice search, which was limited in terms of functionality.

"We see virtual assistants as inevitable in the workplace", said Joel Jacobs, vice president, CIO and CSO at MITRE Corporation in Bedford, Mass.

Google and Amazon are dominating the smart speaker market. If you have changed your default marketplace while using an Alexa-enabled product, you will need to perform this step for each marketplace to delete all voice recordings associated with your account.
