This was his sixth year with the Panthers and first as defensive coordinator.

The Indianapolis Colts were expected to interview Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks for their vacant head coach position Thursday.

Indianapolis and Detroit also had requested permission to talk with Wilks, although he did not take those interviews, the sources said. They plan to speak with recently fired Broncos running backs coach Eric Studesville on Wednesday.

Seven of the nine coaches that Arizona has interviewed in its coaching search remain busy: Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak, Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo, Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, Pats linebackers coach Brian Flores and Atlanta Falcons special teams coach Keith Armstrong. Gettleman was the general manager in Carolina for four years and got to see Wilks operate as the defensive backs coach.

Wilks also coached the San Diego Chargers secondary from 2009-11 and the Chicago Bears defensive backs from 2006-08.
