MLS launching esports league for FIFA 18 World Cup

Major League Soccer Enters Esports With a New FIFA Competition

"We're honored to partner with MLS within the EA SPORTS FIFA 18 Global Series as we continue to help grow competitive gaming and soccer in North America", said Todd Sitrin, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Competitive Gaming Division at EA.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is entering the world of esports in a big way, introducing a new Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 league in partnership with EA Sports.

The eMLS league will only feature players from the USA and Canada, and a number of real MLS teams will be hosting their own eMLS clubs. The organizers of eMLS are leaving that process up to the individual clubs; each one will figure out its own method of selecting a Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 pro "from its region". Do you have the skills to compete for your team in the eMLS?

The NBA has already started qualifying for gamers hoping to be part of the NBA 2K League when it tips off in May. An eMLS rep was unable to comment on this aspect of the league by press time.

The top 128 players in the world will advance to two playoff events in June with 32 of those moving on to the Federation Internationale de Football Association eWorld Cup 2018 Grand Final in August. The eMLS field will fight it out in the league's own headlining event, the eMLS Cup, which is scheduled to take place during PAX East 2018 in April.

The FIFA eWorld Cup is the conclusion of the FIFA 18 Global Series tournament, an expansion of the long-running annual esports competitions in EA's FIFA franchise. Details on the league's format aren't available yet; MLS said it will provide further information on how to qualify and compete later.

Last year, the NBA announced its own esports league, the new NBA 2K League, in partnership with Take Two Interactive, makers of the popular NBA 2K video game. It seems hard to believe that a professional sports league would spin up an esports organization just for one year, not as a long-term pursuit, and a spokesperson told Polygon that MLS is working to establish eMLS in a way that can support future iterations of EA's games. Major League Soccer is partnering with EA Sports to create a competitive league around the company's Federation Internationale de Football Association 18 soccer game.
