TN reports no widespread flu; MS, AR among hardest hit

DHHS reported last week that more than 200 North Carolinians tested positive for the virus. But health experts at the CDC say there are other, proven ways to help fight the flu.

She says the gene gun doesn't hurt at all, because the particles are too small for your skin to feel. Twenty-one of these states, Louisiana included, are also showing high numbers of cases, according to epidemiologists.

Usually just one subtype, either influenza A or B, is responsible for the majority of cases but last week 522 cases of type A and 546 cases of type B were recorded in England and Wales. Widespread flu activity has been reported in 23 states.

"Any time there's a mismatch between the vaccine and the circulating strain of the flu, you're going to see more cases", Radtke told the newspaper. The number of cases reported for the week ending December 23 was 1,745, a 96 percent jump over the 892 reports received the previous week.

Visitors with influenza-like illnesses, fever or cough. Of the nine deaths, one was ages 5 to 24; four were ages 50-64 and four were 65 or older.

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is reporting the state's first child death from flu for the 2017-18 flu season.

Something similar happened a few years ago. Also, the influenza vaccine effectiveness is generally lower against the A (H3N2) strain.

There's a process to design flu vaccines that starts 18 months ahead of the flu season. In addition, the vaccine included DNA for a protein that is highly conserved and, thus, shared across different strains of virus. This spike could correlate to the close proximity people have with others during the holidays when they gather with family and friends. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Using the Sick Weather app on an Apple Watch you can also get reminders when it's best to wash your hands. Many factors go into maintaining good health and a strong immune system. Physicians, pharmacists, and county health departments can provide flu vaccinations for Alabamians.

Because the flu is a viral infection, antibiotic drugs are completely useless against this illness.

Not everyone with flu will have a fever. Since it takes up to two weeks after vaccination for full immunity to take effect, anyone who has not already been vaccinated should do so now. Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus and ear infections are examples of complications from flu.

Health officials recommend getting vaccinated against the flu nonetheless. For example, people with asthma may experience asthma attacks while they have the flu, and people with chronic congestive heart failure may experience worsening of this condition.
