Asked about a recent incident when militants hurled a grenade at his residence, the PDP legislator said, "We believe in India and they believe in something else that is why I was attacked".
"Aijaz Ahmed has insulted the security forces and will of the nation to fight militancy, and if he has sympathy with militants then he should leave mainstream politics, he added. We should not celebrate their killing", said Mir, who represents the Watchi constituency in Shopian.
Opposition national conference has hit out at PDP saying this shows PDP is a party of contradictions, senior national conference leader Akbar Lone said, "There is a contradiction in the PDP, on one side they kill militants and on the other hand such a statement coming from the PDP MLA, this contradicts CM Mehbooba Mufti's assembly statement".
The PDP MLA's statement came a day after he asked legislators in the J&K assembly to not express happiness over the killings of Kashmiri militants.
"Jo Kashmir ke hein, chahey kisi bhi halat mein marein, woh martyr hein (Those who hail from Kashmir are martyrs irrespective of the fact under what circumstances they get killed)", he said, while replying to a question whether he considered slain militants as martyrs. "How can they be someone's brother?" asked Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.
His comments were denounced by the BJP, which partners the PDP or People's Democratic Party in Kashmir. We should not glorify the killing of terrorists. "We feel sad when our security forces are martyred as well".
He said they are children, who have gone down the wrong track, and should be counselled and brought back. "Terrorists and separatists are enemies of Kashmir, Kashmiris, development, and peace". We should sympathise with the parents of jawans and with the parents of terrorists as well.
Last week, Rafi Ahmad Mir, the PDP's chief spokesperson, had said the party condemned and regretted the killings of both policemen and militants.
