Pricing for the Passat GT starts at $29,090.
The Passat GT joins the Passat lineup for model year 2018 as a limited-run special model based off the R-Line trim.
The new performance model, which was designed at the company's North American design and engineering center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, bows at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. "Combining a local perspective with our global engineering expertise allows us to create vehicles that meet the needs and desires of customers here".
"The Passat GT illustrates how the North American Region can shape Volkswagen vehicles specifically for the USA market", said Dr. Matthias Erb, chief engineer of North America for Volkswagen. Exterior color options include Pure White, Reflex Silver, Platinum Grey, and Deep Black.
The production model looks almost identical to the concept Passat GT that VW revealed at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The new Passat GT will be powered by Volkswagen's 3.6-liter V-6, producing 280 hp and 258 pounds-feet of torque on regular gas. The V-6 Passat's EPA-rated fuel economy is 19/28/22 mpg city/highway/combined.

The look of on the outside matches the performance under the hood. The R-Line's bumper is carried over, but the Passat GT throws in a honeycomb grille and a red accent line, which is meant to remind you of the Golf GTI.
LED headlights, optional on the R-Line are standard, and the GT has LED daytime running lights and blackened LED taillights. The auto also receives GT badging in the grille, back of the vehicle and inside.
The Passat GT gets a sport suspension and 19-inch, two-tone "Tornado" wheels, which are accentuated with red-painted brake calipers. The roof is black and so are the mirror caps, window, and door trim. The rear fascia also gets black bumper trim and a double exhaust. Black leatherette is used on the seats, with gray inserts and contrast stitching.
Inside, the Passat GT adds piano black center console and vent trim, carbon fiber optic décor, black headliner, and aluminum GT-badged sills. Standard interior comfort features include: a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, dual-zone Climatronic® automatic climate control, and heated side mirrors.
Automakers can't just offer performance without some technological goodies. A 6.3-inch touchscreen anchors the infotainment system to keep drivers connected.
