The Aamir Khan-starrer is has now won the award for the Best Asian Film at the 7th Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards.

"Veteran actress Shabana Azmi, a member of the Grand Jury for Best Asian Film, on December 6 tweeted: "'Dangal" wins Best Asian Film at AACTA.

The honorable jury was led by the Hollywood actor Russell Crowe. "It was a unanimous decision", wrote Azmi, alongside a selfie with the Oscar-winning actor.

Even Russell Crowe tweeted about it.

The flick was based on the life of Haryana wrestler Mahavir Phogat and his daughters. The film starred Aamir Khan as Phogat with Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra playing the adult version of professional wrestlers Geeta and Babita.

Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar acted in the movie as younger versions of the Phogat sisters with Sakshi Tanwar as their mother.

The Best Film AACTA was one of a dozen awards, from as many nominations, claimed at the event by the critically lauded Australian film, which stars Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman.

Actor Anupam Kher attended the red carpet of the AACTA.

Griffith alumnus and respected film producer Angie Fielder and her crewmates on Lion have taken out the Best Film prize at the 2017 AACTA Awards.
