In a televised speech from his home in the ash-Shati refugee camp in Gaza, the head of the Political Bureau of Hamas movement, Ismail Haniyya, strongly denounced the American decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the embassy to the occupied city, and called for a new Intifada in every part of occupied Palestine.
"Following the sirens that were sounded in Hof Ashkelon & Sha'ar HaNegev regional councils in southern Israel earlier this evening, 2 launches from Gaza towards Israel landed within the Gaza Strip", IDF tweeted.
Clashes were also reported throughout Judea and Samaria as Palestinians rioted following United States President Donald Trump's declaration Wednesday night that the USA recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
The IDF added that they hold Hamas, which governs Gaza but is supposed to hand over control to the Palestinian Authority on Sunday, responsible for any rocket fire emanating from the Strip. In the blast and its aftermath, 12 members of the terrorist group were killed, along with two Hamas operatives.
Dozens of Palestinians in Gaza also staged violent protests along the security fence surrounding the coastal enclave, throwing rocks and rolling burning tires at the barrier and the Israeli soldiers on the other side.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, some 2,147 Palestinians were killed during the 51-day Israeli offensive on Gaza in 2014, including 72 who later succumbed to their wounds.
Jerusalem's status is among the most hard issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the USA traditional position has been that it must be negotiated between the two sides.
United States President Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on Wednesday during a televised speech from the White House. Today, we acknowledge that Jerusalem is the Israeli capital.
