Pantone has selected Ultra Violet (Pantone 18-3838) as its Color of the Year for 2018, saying the "dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us toward the future".
In an interview with The New York Times, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, called it "the most complex of all colors, because it takes two shades that are seemingly diametrically opposed-blue and red-and brings them together to create something new".
The 2018 colour follows 2017's 'Greenery, ' a vibrant and fresh shade that reflected new beginnings. Enigmatic purples have always been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality and artistic brilliance, noted Pantone. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own. Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.
This year's choice speaks to a mystical or spiritual quality, the brand said, because of its association with mindfulness practices and the use of purple-toned lighting to inspire a connection in meditation.
Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, said, "The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than "what's trending" in the world of design; it's truly a reflection of what's needed in our world today". "Designers and brands should feel empowered to use color to inspire and influence".
There's no doubt this hue will dictate home design trends in the year ahead - along with fashion, beauty, food and packaging - and it's said to be surprisingly easy to experiment with the distinctive colour.
