Nintendo Switch Passes 2.5 Million Units Sold in Japan; PS4 Passes 5.5 Million Units

There's also some vaguely good news for PlayStation VR, with Sony finally able to announce a new milestone for the burgeoning virtual reality headset.

The Nintendo Switch appears to be more popular than Sony's PlayStation 4 console in Japan, Nintendo has reached the 2.5 million units sold faster than the other consoles.

Sony has sold a total of 5.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles in Japan, although the console has been available for considerably longer than Nintendo's new console. The headset has sold over two million units globally since its release a year ago with game sales totally in excess of 12.2 million copies at game stores and digital downloads as of December 3, 2017. And 12.2 million copies of the 150 titles released for PlayStation VR have been sold at retailers across the world and through digital downloads on the PlayStation Store.

"We are delighted that so many people are enjoying the unique entertainment proposition of PlayStation 4 and that an emerging technology like PlayStation VR continues to gain traction. We will continue to work closely with partners to maintain this momentum and remain steadfast in making PS4 the best place to play". There's also more than 130 videogames and other content now in development for the headset states the company, all due to be released by the end of 2018.

SIE will continue to further expand both PS4 and PS VR to deliver entertainment experiences that are only possible on PlayStation. Does not include add-on content.
