Thrones of Britannia: A Total War Saga Has Been Announced

Total War is getting a Viking-inspired spin-off next year

The first Total War Saga is Thrones of Britannia, set in Britain after the 878 AD Viking Invasion

The Norse warlords are firmly established, but the ambitious kings of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales have aspirations of their own - not least the great King Alfred of Wessex.

Creative Assembly, the developer behind the popular Total War strategy series, announced a new spin-off series titled Total War Saga back in July. It will cover the entire British Isles.

"Our aim with Total War Sagas is to explore key flashpoints at distinct places and times in history", said series director, Mike Simpson, in a press release sent to GamesBeat. "This will complement our broader-scope titles perfectly". In an FAQ from Creative Assembly from earlier in the year, they describe a Total War Saga game being bigger than a previous game's Campaign Pack while also not being quite different enough to be a new era-spanning Total War game. Among the ten playable factions fighting for dominance will be Gaelic warriors, Nordic vikings and the Anglo-Saxons, all thirsty to put an axe in their fellow mans fo'head.

The game will offer a super-detailed campaign map, with more regional distinction.

What engine is it built from? .

The franchise started in 2000 with Total War: Shogun.

Will it be available as a physical product or is it digital only?

The first of the Total War Sagas, Thrones of Britannia, will be released next year.

There's no price or date for the game outside of a vague 2018 window at present, but the first gameplay footage is "likely" the time you'll see gameplay footage.
