The Israeli army has deployed anti-rocket batteries of its "Iron Dome" air defense system at key points in the country to guard against retaliation by the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad, Israeli media reported late Monday.
Ten PIJ operatives, including two senior commanders, were killed during Israel's operation to destroy the tunnel.
Coordinator of Israeli Government Activities in the Occupied Territories Yoav Mordechai announced yesterday that Israel is expecting Islamic Jihad to retaliate. The IDF wants to prepare a quick response in the event that the Islamic Jihad decides to act and also to enable the work on the barrier to continue.
"We advise the leadership of the Islamic Jihad in Damascus to exercise caution and control their affairs", Mordechai said on Saturday.
The move is being conducted as part of the IDF's reinforcement efforts against the Gaza Strip following the Palestinian Islamic Jihad's (PIJ) threats in response to the terror tunnel strike, in which two senior-level Hamas terrorists were eliminated.
In a vow to respond with equal measure, Islamic Jihad urged "Israel's threats don't scare us".
Israel has been targeting the Islamic Jihad movement following the Israeli-led attack on the Gaza Strip's cross-border tunnel, fearing revenge by the movement.
Israel has said it is holding the bodies of five fighters retrieved from the tunnel, and implied it could use them as bargaining chips to retrieve the remains of two soldiers believed to be held by Hamas. "It is playing with fire at the expense of the citizens of Gaza, at the expense of Palestinian reconciliation and at the expense of the entire region".
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attends the weekly cabinet meeting at his office in Jerusalem, November 12, 2017. "These days, there are still those who toy with trying renewed attacks on Israel", Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting. "In any case, we see Hamas as responsible for every attack that emanates from, or is planned against us in, the Gaza Strip", he said.
